Tone card
What defines the sound
- A 1990 Rickenbacker, which Ed Roland says was his only electric guitar when he recorded Shine.
- Drop D-flat tuning, a whole step and a half below standard on the low string.
- A Soldano amp, by Roland's own account, with a second account naming an Ensoniq DP/4 rack processor.
- Tone shaped by the right hand, raking near the bridge or picking further up the neck.
- A basement demo that became the record, oddness and all.
The tone card above separates the documented gear from our own GarageBand recreation, with sources.
